VD contagious? (2011)

At the risk of being shot down, generally shouted at or most probably just ignored, I thought it time for another prediction. This one at the very heart of VD!

Let me first apologise if this has been mentioned before - I did a search first - honest!

I predict that VD will not attract a large active member base unless it implements a thread notification option.

Just before I duck my head back down below the parapets to avoid the volley of abuse, let me explain...

My team and I conducted some analysis about 18 months ago in to discussion thread notifications and their impact on return visits. All in the name of advertising income streams I might add. The results were interesting if not that surprising. Just over 85% of members who had thread notification enabled returned to the site in question using the URL in the notification. The same group then spent on average another 5 minutes browsing the rest of the site during the return session. 'Yippee' was the general response from our sponsors as this meant more hits for the ads on the various rotors. Those members that chose not to use the thread notification option returned far less frequently.

We live in an age of information overload. Nothing new there I hear you mutter. You may argue that this would be yet another email! I am a member of numerous technical forums as well as some less, shall we say, professional ones. I just do not have the time to check back to all the sites frequently to see if there has been any updates to any threads I have an interest in. Of course one might log in once a day or so to take a look at what's new but that's not too good for ad visibility or for simply keeping up with a thread, particularly if you are the main contributor to it.

Now VD is after all a discussion forum with a pretty dress on and this functional omission is conspicuous by it's absence and therefore I conclude it must have been deliberate by TVG and co. I just wondered why.....

....now where did I put my virtual body armour and Glock....

At the risk of taking TGV's name in vain, it was only on Friday just gone he said this in the thought stream; "Nods on comments, links on comments, good God next week there will be email notifications!!!!" I assumed he wasn't being tongue in cheek.

Thank you Mephisto. I was hoping for a response from TGV but I think he is a bit busy at the moment.

Indeed. If notification were enabled you would know I had added a post after yours!

As a complete IT numpty, I would say that on the face of it, Nemesis' suggestion has the ring of common sense to it. However, I would not know how to start so it's over to you IT types. I think that VD has great potential, and feel lucky to be involved now, but anything that raises the sites profile must be a good thing right?

Going to the loo is indeed tricky... I see I am continuing my tradition of typos with regards to other members acronyms.. sorry TGV (not TVG)... Proves the need to a 'post edit' function too!

I'm not going to comment on this until TGV has put his points forward but give you a 'v' point because it's a sensible post that has the good of Visionary Dictionary at its heart. By the way are you telling us you have more armour to go over the armour you're wearing in you profile pic? How do you go to the loo?
