I am not a member of Facebook because when I did try to register I found it confusing, maybe due to my lack of IT knowledge some of you may say. Now Facebook is forefront on the news at present I would like to know if members e-mail addresses are shown on the site for anyone trawling for whatever purpose.
It seems very odd to me that to be a member of the library, (I only wanted to borrow a book) I had to take ID, ie. Driving License, Utility Bill, Passport.
To be a member of a social networking site where very young children are welcome, surely something more than an e-mail address should be required.
I would be so concerned if I had young children in this day and age. They seem to be born with the fact they think they're invincible and parental guidance counts for nothing. This I think is lack of respect due to parenting. However, I have digressed. Sorry.
Back to my original thoughts. Perhaps up to a certain age, parental permission would have to be sought for youngsters to go on Facebook and similar sites. Maybe parents should insist on having the password, not to check on everything, but a change of behaviour patterns may need to be looked at as with drug taking.
If only our children realised that what comes across as intrusion in their teens is really protection.

I love Facebook. It's friends-reunited and so much more. However, the gossip that it creates is horrendous! I know you don't have to put the ins and outs of a ducks whatsit on there, but I find myself being completely sucked in by it, and before I know it, I've told the world some of my very private business. It was such a big deal when TGV and I separated. Neither of us knew when to 'update our relationship status' and when we did, the amount of attention that it attracted was unbearable. But that's what the site is about. Keeping people informed about your business. You just have to be careful how much info you reveal.

Deacongirl in answer to your question on teaching internet safety at school my son is 7 (soon 8) and he is being taught it but I too teach my too at home about internet safety. As for eating well that is next week and I am going in as part of my dental side to teach healthy foods for teeth!

I feel the same PK, it keeps me in constant touch with the UK and I use it to promote things. Safety on the net for children and adults is a major problem. Are there lessons on internet safety as part of the school curriculum? I know schools have such a lot to teach but I do wonder if there should be a little more emphasis on current hazards like too much sun exposure, eating well for your future health etc. Or does that already happen?

I agree wity Hi_ImJenny's last sentance. Just be careful. I don't know anyone addicted to facebook but personally I find it really good for work. I have many of the children I teach as my friend's and can update my status with messages about class changes and info and also send group messages that they can all comment on. I also love seeing what my close (but far away) friends are doing and seeing their pictures. I don't use many applications on there as I simply don't have time. I think face book is brilliant, how did I live without it?

If anything, there needs to be a general education of facebook. The children themselves need to understand why privacy is so important, kids comment on the stories but don't seem to twig that they too could be at risk. Then, parents need to understand that facebook is harmless in the majority, many believe it to be the devil incarnate when really it isn't. It's not what the site is, it's how the site is used. Responsibility is key. It's like with pin numbers in a sense, learn to be careful and you won't have any problems - just don't go leaving it on bits of paper or shouting it out in the street. With facebook, enjoy yourself and chat to your friends but don't have your mobile number, address and email all over the place.

@col, good point,(those nights in Berlin were always going to come back to haunt you)although i was only really thinking of nonces pretending to be 13 year old girls. Im glad its been mentioned that some caution needs to be applied in whatever our kids do as i seem to remember blokes exposing themselves to us in parks on a weekly basis as a kid, we just knew to lob rocks at them and run away.I feel facebook is just another thing from a long list to point the finger at when we the authorities offer no resolve.

As Jenny states, she is not addicted. Maybe that makes a difference, I don't know. I know from what a friend writes it seems like Jeremy Kyle show in text! There are always predators in all walks of life. I worry and wonder but don't have any answers.

You make a good point there Jenny. It's really not a lot different from 'don't take sweets from strangers' or 'don't accept a lift from someone you don't know'. Like you say the world's getting bigger and we just have to adapt.

Hi_ImJenny - 2010-03-10 16:25:31
Everytime I hear a story about facebook in the news, there is a part of me that thinks 'It's their own fault'. I mean, my account is on the highest privacy settings so that only my friends can see what my statuses, photos and so on. I'm not addicted to it thank god...but I do think there will a come time when asked by our children 'Mum where did you meet Dad?' the answer will be 'Facebook' more times than 'At school'. The worlds a-changing and facebook's in the middle of it :)

Don't you believe it MS. "Hi Col! Remember me and that night in Berlin thirty years ago" in a Facebook message is one thing. "Hi Col! Remember me and that night in Berlin" in my email inbox is a little close to home.

@ TGV - So it bloody is. Not sure I like that. There is an option for it to be visible to 'Only me' and I've just changed it to that. Do me a favour someone and check that you can't see it will you.

Just realised I said "Like NG there are aspects of it that can be unbelievably annoying". I, of course, meant to say "Like NG, I think there are aspects of it that can be unbelievably annoying". NG is of course an angel on skates.

To be quite honest Mama, to my mind, you're not missing much. Some people love it and can't live without it, but for me I pop on occasionally and leave the odd silly comment on a friend's posting. Pretty much like I do here really. Like NG there are aspects of it that can be unbelievably annoying, like all the prods and pokes and flowers and pets and farmyards that need looking after and blah blah blah...... I make it a rule to only accept friend requests from people I know first hand. Friends of friends, even if I recognise them, if I don't know them as a personal friend get turned away. I don't think the email address is up for public view. Facebook themselves have it to send you notifications but I don't think it's on display. How do you prove who you are? That's the big internet question isn't it. The sad case that has brought Facebook to the attention of all right now is the one of a murderer joining Facebook under the false identity of minor and it is so easy to do. Parental permission could be sought, but surely anyone could seek membership as a minor and when parental permission is asked for, turn themselves into the parent and grant that permission. I don't know what the answer is. Whatever it is it will strenuously restrict the freedoms the internet provides, but then that in turn may end up being worth it. I dunno. Over to the next comment.

I suspended my Facebook page because of all the "Friends" requests that bombarded my in-box. Requests from friends of friends of friends. It's positively incestuous.
